The Amaro That Was Born at the Table

On the edge of Milan — the kind of neighbourhood that still feels like the real city — Trattoria San Filippo Neri has been telling a story of encounter, friendship and honest Italian cooking for over 30 years.

Walk in for the first time and it's hard not to be struck immediately: long communal tables that invite conversation and conviviality, where even a solo diner finds themselves drawn into the warmth of the room. A place where people come to eat, but stay to connect.

Mario, who inherited the trattoria from his parents over 20 years ago, spent the summer of 2022 diving deep into the world of amaro — putting it front and centre in his offering, letting it flow through long summer evenings filled with stories, laughter and old-fashioned board games.

That curiosity didn't stop at the glass. It became a bottle.

The Name Is No Coincidence

San Filippo Neri — the saint to whom this amaro is dedicated — lived in the first half of the 1500s. He gathered street children around him, drawing them in through joy, music and play, and in doing so created what we know today as the Oratorio. Known for his mischievous character, he was later called the Saint of Joy and the Jester of God.

An amaro named after him could only be one thing: generous, warm and full of life.

The Bottle

Amaro San Filippo is crafted from 23 carefully selected botanicals, with star anise, cinchona bark, cinnamon and Pernambuco orange taking centre stage — a rare variety of Washington Navel orange that releases persistent, beautifully fragrant essential oils.

The result is a medium-aromatic amaro with depth, character and a finish that lingers — just like the best evenings do.

Best enjoyed at Trattoria San Filippo Neri. But we won't judge you for drinking it elsewhere.
